Description

Inspired by the unique relation to the woods, the objective was to create a house that brings the forest inside through large glass panels and creates an ever-changing seasonal backdrop for the interior living spaces

The house was conceived as a simple two-storey villa placed in the centre of a flat, rectangular site, surrounded by mature trees. The ground floor spaces are defined by a series of interconnecting white painted brick walls with full height glazing between. The plan of the house and arrangement of these walls, divides the garden into four quadrants, each with a different theme.

The upper floor, raised just above ground level, contains the main living spaces and master bedroom, freeing up the basement to be occupied by the clients’ children.

Open plan living, kitchen and dining spaces are at ground level, arranged around a top-lit, double height stairwell that also acts as a gallery space. The gallery bleeds into adjoining spaces with paintings carefully positioned in each. These spaces have strong connections to formal and informal garden areas. The upper level, a timber clad volume with screened windows and carved out balconies, contains the family’s private quarters and includes bathrooms lit only from above.

The design continues our investigation of how to create privacy from neighbouring dwellings while maintaining  connections to landscape and the sky. For this, Brick House utilised  large glazed windows above the brick walls detailed to have no visible evidence of window framing, creating the illusion that all public spaces of the interior are open to the external elements beyond. The floor introduces a subtle topography into the flat site with level changes at the living and dining area to create thresholds within the open plan arrangement.
